A little bit of design with CANVA

Design is also a passion that we pursue at LingoContent.
We do a lot of writing for various clients, but many texts need to be "underlined" with interesting images/designs. That's why we call Canva to our rescue!

Canva is an excellent online platform for making designs. We have been using Photoshop for many years now, but now we find Canva very interesting. We use it for our social media pages&campaigns and for our English educational programs.

So far, so good! :)

If you want to share your experience with Canva or could use some suggestions about it, you know where to find us... Here, of course! :)

Seven Most Common Misconceptions about Coffee

Coffee is one of the most adored beverages around the world and also the one that is most talked about. People are still not sure if they can enjoy the cup of the beloved drink without consequences. These are the most common myths about coffee and caffeine.

1.      Caffeine in coffee causes insomnia – This is probably the most widespread misconception about caffeine. As a matter of fact, your body both absorbs and eliminates the caffeine quickly. In eight to ten hours, 75 percent of caffeine is eliminated from your body. It means that your morning coffee (or two… or three…) will not affect your sleep at night. However, if you are drinking coffee later in the day, make sure not to drink it, at least, six hours before bedtime. That is... If you can resist the sweet call of the coffee!

2.      Caffeine is addictive – Addiction is pretty much a broad term. Caffeine in no way can do to your body what ˝real˝ addictive drugs can do. It is noted that there is a mild physical addiction, but it is not considered endangering by many physicians. If, on the other hand, you want to be off the coffee wagon, you might experience some symptoms of discomfort like headache, anxiety, trouble concentrating, but they stay only for a few days.

3.      Caffeine sobers you up – Some people think that they are safe when taking alcohol and coffee at the same time. But most experts advise not to do that because caffeine does not boost the alcohol metabolism. It only stimulates the nervous system, which makes you think that you are more sober than you really are!

4.      Caffeine intake can lead to heart disease – Although the correlation between the two is still being examined, a cup of coffee or two a day can do you no harm. Actually, many studies have shown no association between drinking coffee and cardiovascular diseases. Even some researchers found that coffee, if taken moderately, can lower the risk of the coronary heart disease in women!

5.      Coffee causes the hypertension – Studies concerning this issue are still in progress. Still, some of them suggest that regular coffee consumption does not increase the risk of high blood pressure. If you happen to already have hypertension, be careful about your coffee intake and consult your doctor.

6.      The risk of osteoporosis – Low bone density is not proven to be associated with high caffeine intake. The data show that caffeine is not significant risk factor for osteoporosis. The caffeine itself does decrease calcium absorption, but the process can be neutralized by adding the slight amount of milk into your coffee. However, elderly women should limit the caffeine consumption to 300 mg per day.

7.      Caffeine can help you lose weight – Although caffeine boosts your metabolism, the situation is trickier than you may think. If you thought that all you have to do is just sit and drink coffee and that it would lead to rapid weight loss… You were wrong! The benefits of caffeine are such that it can give you the significant amount of energy while working out and cause you to be more productive in the gym.

So, coffee-lovers, it's up to you now...

Ingredients That Will Chase Boredom Away From Your Coffee

If you happen to want more from your coffee and make it more interesting, there are simple and easy solutions for you. People all around the world drink coffee and they have their own ways of making it very tasty. Apart from the classic routine of coffee + sugar + milk (creamer), there are also other ingredients which allow you to let your imagination wander in order to make your coffee extraordinary.

            Spices

You are probably using spices in your everyday cooking, so why not add them to your coffee, too? You can use cinnamon, cocoa powder, cardamom, nutmeg, ginger, cayenne pepper, black pepper, sesame seeds, pumpkin pie spice mix. The best thing to do is to add the ground spice directly to the coffee grounds before brewing.

In Mexico, coffee is prepared in a clay pot with cinnamon sticks and piloncillo (unrefined whole cane sugar). In the other part of the world, in Morocco, they add spices like sesame seeds, black pepper and nutmeg. If you add cocoa powder, milk and sugar to hot coffee, you get the all time favorite – Mocha! The combo of ground coffee, grated orange peel, ginger and cinnamon is also a winner.

The use of spices is very valuable for those trying to shed their pounds, because it makes your coffee not only super-delicious, but also makes you yearn less for sugar!

            Milk

Ah, the milk… There are various kinds of milk you can add to your coffee. Swap your usual milk or cream with rice milk, soy milk, oat milk, almond milk or coconut milk and you’ll taste somewhat different coffee. Condensed milk is also a great option. Whipped cream is a great ingredient for desserts, but if you add it to your coffee, you’ll have a ball!

            Butter and oil

It may sound strange to you, but there is a new trend in nutrition which recommends adding butter to your coffee. But, wait a moment! Not every kind of butter is allowed. Only grass-fed organic unsalted butter will do. Just add two tablespoons of butter to your coffee and your breakfast is ready. Those in favor of this beverage say that it gives them the extra energy.

Coconut oil is very popular when it comes to nutrition lately. So, some swear by coconut oil in their coffee. Mix the coffee and one to two teaspoons of coconut oil in the blender and you’ll get the drink that increases your energy and speeds up your metabolism.

            Liqueur

This is a well-known ingredient and follower of both coffee and tea. Whiskey, rum and cognac can be added to your coffee. But, it is not recommended to take the boozey version of coffee in the morning! The famous Irish coffee is made of one cup of freshly brewed hot coffee, one tablespoon of brown sugar, three tablespoons of Irish whiskey and some heavy cream, slightly whipped. The German coffee, Pharisaër, is enriched with rum and whipped cream, whereas Maria Theresia, exclusive Viennese coffee kind, contains orange liqueur.

            Ice cream

Italians are very fond of gelato, so they make affogato! Affogato al Caffè is made of vanilla ice cream and hot espresso poured over it. Deee-licious!

            Lemon juice

In Portugal, they drink their own version of Algeria originated coffee beverage Mazagran. Coffee drinkers prepare it with strong coffee or espresso, served over ice with lemon juice.

            Cheese

              Huh?!

In some parts of Finland, the drink called Kaffeost is served, which is coffee mixed with cheese, Leipäjuusto. A few small pieces of cheese are placed in a cup, with hot coffee poured over them. First, you drink the coffee and then you eat the cheese. Simple as that!

     Eggs

In some countries, it’s customary to mix eggs and coffee. For example, in Austria, Kaisermelange has black coffee, egg yolk and honey in it.

              Salt

To reduce the bitterness in coffee, a pinch of salt is the right solution. You can add it in coffee grounds, but also in the brewed coffee.

With all these possibilities, it’s very hard to follow that old Turkish saying: “Coffee should be black as hell, strong as death and sweet as love”. Variety is king!

Kids fashion for the cold Autumn days

It is September and LINGO school is up and running! But we decided to give you a somewhat different text, which is not so education-wise... Or is it? See for yourself!

September is usually a very traumatic month for some parents. Not only do they worry about the kids’ books and notebooks, but also about socialization of their children! How will they fit in? Are they going to like their new friends? How are they going to respond to the teacher? So many questions emerge, and I guess that parents deserve a little break! Don’t you think so?!
That’s why today’s post is going to cover the „light side“ of September. And that is fashion, of course! Not only adults want to look good, kids are fond of it, too. So, let’s take a journey.

First, we shall thread into the Armani empire, in which they paid great deal of attention to kids’ couture. Armani Junior is the name of their kiddy branch.
They have something really special for the boys, and those are chequered blazers, which will make your wee gentlemen look super-cute. Also, there is a revival of the „college jackets“, the ones you know from the famous movies like Grease and American Graffiti. Seeing your „little John Travolta“, wearing Grease-inspired outfit is priceless!
For the girls, on the other hand, Armani fashion troops are suggesting the knitted dresses in which your little princesses look very elegant. I remember, when I was a kid, I had a whole lot of knitted things. My granny was a passionate knitter (she said it calmed her nerves...), so I was rather fed up with the knitted stuff. Now, when I mentioned this, I can say: Boy, was she nervous..! Armani also suggested florals, especially in the shape of dresses and jackets. Flower-Girl-Power is the mantra for this season, according to Armani.
Look at the picture and see the part of the collection, yourself:

Now, let’s make one thing clear: Armani is the Magician of fashion! So, the prices are... well... „magical“!

And if you survived the „pricing shock“, let’s move on with a more affordable brand, H&M.
In the girls’ department, at H&M, we notice the lovely tutu-like skirts. It’s no real wonder, because almost every girl, at least once in her life, dreamed about being a ballerina!
Also, there is a return of the winter combat-like boots, which are similar to those that Dr.Marten’s makes. Now, they may look a bit „harsh“ to some, but the girls wearing them look really sweet! If you are a pacifist like me, just bear in mind that this is only a „fashion play“, and not the real thing. At the end of the day, it’s better to wage fashion „wars“ than the real atrocious things...
H&M haven’t forgotten the boys. No way! The keyword this season is „jackets“. The leather ones are really prominent. Hopefully, the faux-leather, because you should teach your kids to be eco-friendly from the very early age!

Take a peek at the H&M kids collection:

To wrap this whole thing up, it needs to be said that we are not saying that you should be fashion victims! No, no, no! These were just suggestions how to look tres chic at the early age. The bottom-line is to wear what you and your kids like and what makes you feel comfortable and nice. Tell your kids just to be themselves. And remember: Creativity is the word! At least, we at LINGO school think so!

Stay happy and creative!

Hey! Make Your Coffee the Barista Way!

Have you ever wondered how the baristas make that marvelous cup of coffee when you are about to treat yourself after work, after a long walk in a park or when you are rushing to a very important morning meeting? Well, coffee lovers, this is your lucky day! Here are the tips and tricks that will work quite well!

Basically, you need only three things when making a high class cup of coffee. Can you guess? Why, of course, those are:
-          coffee
-          water
-          the brewer.

Coffee

The most important thing is the good choice of coffee. Coffee is grown all over the world and there are a lot of varieties. You should know that the African coffee tastes differently than the one grown in Indonesia or Central America. In order to find out which one works best for you, ˝experimenting˝ is the word.
If you are set out to be your own barista, the pre-ground coffee is a no-no! So, the cleverest thing to do is to buy the beans. Some will tell you to even buy the green coffee beans and roast them yourself. In case you are not really fond of roasting, make sure to find the right roaster where you can buy the coffee immediately after roasting. Buy your coffee more often and in smaller amounts. And one more thing: don’t keep coffee beans in the fridge.
The next step is grinding your coffee beans. There’s a certain philosophy behind it... Too fine grinding or too coarse does not do the job. You have to find the middle-ground. There isn’t a universal rule, it’s all about trial and error.

Water

Almost 99 percent of coffee is water, so it is essential to pick the right water. If you are lucky enough to live in a place with good tap water, you can use it. For those less fortunate, it is advised that they use filtered water. Distilled water is out of the question if you want that great tasting coffee.
The water temperature is also very important. For best tasting coffee, ideal temperature is between 195°F (91°C) and 205°F (96°C). Boiling water is not the best choice for coffee making, because your coffee might taste bitter.

The Brewer

The coffee brewer and its choice are also relevant. If you use the drip coffeemaker it should contain the following features: it heats the water up to 205°F (96°C), it has thermal carafe instead of the glass one and the large brewing basket is necessary.
The next thing you should bear in mind is coffee-to-water ratio. According to National Coffee Association USA, the general guideline is one to two tablespoons of ground coffee per every six ounces (1.8 deciliters) of water. It might sound quite a lot, but that’s how baristas do it!

To complete the whole experience of coffee drinking, drink coffee while fresh. After the brewing process is done, wait a few minutes before serving. The ideal temperature for sipping your coffee is between 180°F (82°C) and 185°F (85°C).
To get the real feel, coffee should be drunk slowly with all your senses immersed into it. Enjoy the look, color, taste, smell and warmth of the beverage. Enjoy every sip!
